To place the Corvette Museum sinkhole information in one location.

http://blog.caranddriver.com/national-corvette-museum-sinkhole-swallows-eight-vettes-turns-hump-day-upside-down/

http://corvettemuseum.org/enews/backups/media/sinkhole.htm
Plus the above links by Sim.

If this prototype ZR-1 can be brought back, the eight Corvettes sunk twenty or so feet into Earth can be brought back.

And via one of the swallowed cars ('93 ZR-1 Spyder) comes a trivia question: Why didn't Chevrolet offer a factory C4 ZR-1 convertible?

I'm guessing chassis rigidity.

↑ … or lack thereof. That has a lot to do with it.

I'll post the answer here 24 hours after the question was posed in case others want to take a stab at it.

The answer below, as Russia Today weighs in as well:
http://rt.com/usa/corvette-sinkhole-museum-kentucky-094/

Chevrolet did not offer a convertible C4 ZR1 because under hard launches the chassis would flex and the windshield would shatter. C4 ZR-1 also had a special coating in the windshield, making it more expensive than the base model's version. The ZR-1's A/C system was a bit handicapped compared to the base model so Chevrolet used this laminate to aid in cooling by keeping more of the sun's rays out.

I know this is unacceptable for a production car though think of the boasting one could say. "Oh yeah? Well my car accelerates so hard my windshield explodes." ASC helped with the ZR-1 Spyder, I wonder what reinforcements went into that car to keep it from busting glass?

So C4 ZR-1 convertible would bust windshields under hard launches and tracking a firm (caged/reinforced) Mk1 Golf/Rabbit a lot causes wrinkles to form in the roof immediately over the header bar [windshield]. Aren't twisting forces fun?

A few years back at an autox someone put slicks on a korean car and the increased chassis forces from the sticky tires actually bent the chassis.  So at least GM was smart enough to not build a convertible version of a car that would trash itself on launch.
