Well I did it I think!!!  I changed the filters in the transmission of my truck. For those of you that don't know I have a 2007 dodge ram 1500. I started it today after work. It was 40 degrees out so it was a regular heat wave!  Got the parts and the fluid an got to work!  Then had to run back to the parts store because my small filter wrench was not small enough!  Got back it got dark!  Put new filters in started to put pan on then WAIT why is the back of the pan sitting low?  Parts store gave me the wrong filter!!!!  Back to the parts store. Got right filters put them in got pan on and now I let the RTV cure and I can drive it. After I check fluid level of course.

All in all not too bad. What should have taken two hours took four but that's how it usually goes at my house.

Good ol' parts stores for ya.

I still try to buy everything I can from the Ford dealer here, only go to Crapa, Autoblow and O'Rapeyas as a last resort.

Well I checked it today and no leaks yea!!!!  I added 7 quarts of fluid and its still a quart low so I will have to get another. I did find out that it is a remanufactured transmission. It has an orange sticker on it the said so and the date it was remanufactured.

That's odd that a truck that new has a reman transmission...

Does it say what brand of reman it is? Lots of shops take advantage of the (false) common belief that Dodge transmissions wear out pre-maturely. (Tux and I can vouch that.) Does the tag say who remanned it or list a mileage?

False claim?  lol that certainly wasn't the case for the 24 and 12 valve cummins diesels with the 727.  Great trans for gassers not built for the torque of the cummins.  My Grandfathers 80's RAM 2500 (think it had the 5.9 but my memory is rusty on that could have been the smaller motor) lasted until about 150k hard miles before it started going.  Could be the newer stuff in gassers does a lot better.  I don't have a lot of experience with them.  However I've read that if you change the trans fluid and filter when your supposed to it really helps the life of any trans though.

Stalker I go to the stealership as a last resort.  I know the part quality can be sketchy from the aftermarket suppliers but I've had good luck with them most of the time.  If the part is really critical and known to need an OEM replacement I'll bite the bullet.

The 24V was never hooked up to a 727 (early 12Vs were). It was hooked up to a 727 derivative (The 48RE), but under normal use, it wasn't an issue. The only one's I seen that had real transmission issues were abused or overloaded, and that will kill any trans prematurely...

But seriously, a lot of issues, especially with the first gen of computer-controlled units, are caused by bad/incorrect fluid, or clogged filters, which mess with sensors and screw things up. They also have bands, which need to be periodically adjusted - something most people didn't do.

Anyway - my point was, I'd bet it's not a factory reman (though it could be). If it's not factory, it's likely the trans could have been repaired, and not just replaced. But that's kind of beside the point now.

Lowrider, since the trans has been replaced, it's likely the truck was driven a little hard. You should really consider flushing the fluids in the t-case and the diffs also, while checking for metal shavings and what-not. Especially if the rear end has the limited-slip diff.

I would too if I didn't have a parts guy at the dealership. I've been buying Ford parts from him for a few years now; I can usually get OEM Ford parts for the same price you would pay normally at the parts store chains. Plus I know I'm getting the right shit, and not just shit.

Hmm, it appears to be a factory reman. That's interesting. Perhaps Tux can tell you more about it based on the sticker. I don't know what that wouldn't be in a CarFax, as a dealer should report all service, though CarFax isn't the end-all, be-all. Again, I bet Tux could help you out - if Chrysler did the work, the VIN will be in the system. You might even be able to get some more notes about the service.

For me parts from the dealer are a last resort also. I typically go through Auto Zone and get the better stuff there. If I have a couple days I can afford to wait and Auto Zone doesn't stock the part or it's real pricey, I go through Rockauto.com and they can help me out. Then the dealership if all else fails, since they never stock the parts for my cars and they have to order them anyways. And even then I'm lucky to get the right part (think back to when I ordered a key FOB and got a brake rotor).

A reman trans isn't all that uncommon.  If the previous owner had it repaired under warranty, they very well may have put a reman in it.  I wouldn't worry about it.  The remans are tested just like the new ones.  Plus they have warranties on them too.  Give me the VIN and I'll check the history.

Ah, I've heard of them taking a similar approach with the new 8-speeds. Rather than repairing it at the dealer, they replace it and leave the technical stuff for the factory/manufacturer. I guess, to a point, that makes sense...
