My Sim Rig Build Empty Sim Racing Setup

Post  TuxTshirt Tue Jul 24, 2012 11:48 pm

I know a few of you use a wheel setup and some have played other titles like iRacing. I was just curious as to what your setups are. I've been doing some serious homework and will probably start saving up and building a sim racing rig. Sadly too (not for Squid[vagina]), I may be switching from Forza sometime in the future. But, who knows? I'll probably still be tempted by Forza 5 (Forza 4.35137324).

So far, I think I'm committed to buying the Logitech G27 wheel and the Fanatec Clubsport pedals.

Wheels are great! But get used to being able to feel the car, especially in turns. It will fight you, and you may find yourself not turning as sharp in some cases.

Anyway, if you want the G27, you might consider a setup like this. It has been sold, but the setup is a neat one to copy.

Also, have you heard of this?

There's a guy on YouTube that has a sweet setup that I'm trying to model mine after with a few variances. Search "Chad Smith 20". Check out his page, the first video is his setup.

Crazy rig, can't say I would ever construct something like that for video game play.

Good job though

So Tux, you going to tell me your name so I can friend you on iRacing? And are you going to be road racing or oval racing?

Nice setup, real well done. I'd like to make one myself one day, but right now no room unless I get rid of my current desk.

Andrew Foresto. I don't have an account yet though. Yes and yes.

Thank you. Get rid of the desk. Laughing

The only problem getting rid of my desk is the fact that I couldn't use my computer anymore. I have a few things in mind as far as building a desk that has a fold-up seat and wheel / pedal assembly, but not quite sure how to make it in the space I have. At least I'm no longer looking at making a simulator cockpit. Just let me know when you get an account though, I gotta watch a rookie you kick the ass of a semi-veteran me with even cars and identical setups lol

Killer rig, Tux! It honestly doesn't look too overboard. yet it doesn't look cheap, either. I can't wait til I get mine going. How sturdy is your rig with the current hardware?

It's very sturdy. You can stand on the piece I have the wheel mounted to. Virtually no flex. The thing weighs close to 100lbs. Not including the chair, the hardware costs about $150 with paint, bolts, and everything.

Awesome!. My part-ish time job (that doesn't pay the bills) involves a monster Mac computer for video editing, I heard there's ways to run iRacing in a Mac. Sometimes I think about sneaking in the office late nights and just uploading iRacing to the Mac.

It's worth the monthly fee that's for sure. But you do need a wheel / pedal assembly or at least a joystick. Though I can't imagine trying to race on a joystick. No No No

Tux, if there's a place to put who referred you, let them know it was me. Unless you have someone else to give credit to. But I'll PM you my name just in case you choose to mention me tongue

I used to play NFS with a joystick... granted that was NFS and a long ass time ago.

Nice rig Tux! Wish I had the time and energy to assemble a similar rig. Did you come up with the design on your own or did you borrow it?

I based it loosely off of one I saw on a guy's YouTube channel. Mine is stronger, cheaper, and simpler than his, but I used his general positioning. Mine also incorporates an adjustable bucket seat, his uses a fixed racing seat (that costs $800, mine was $170). I will add two more monitors as soon as possible. If any of you guys want plans, I could write them up and tell you what materials you'll need.

If I were to build one of these I'd use a factory seat from a Fiero, Miata, or other model with speakers in the headrests. I don't know how difficult it would be to connect the wiring, or to add two speakers, though at least the housings would be available. The speakers are small so their specialty would be high tones.

How awesome would it be if a game could map high tones (like transmission or diff. gear whine, the whine of any artificial aspiration) to a specific set of speakers. We could map those sounds to the speakers right behind our ears. Talk about immersion.

I just want to take the speakers and mic out of my heaset and put them in a racing helmet... With the simulated surround sound, it would be pretty damn accurate...

That would be pretty cool. Your idea parallels NFL quarterbacks, they have speakers in their helmet.

Is that indicated by the green circle (sticker???) on the back? Or is that for camera tracking? QBs are the only ones who have it...
