Who is the WEC?

I was conversing with someone the other day and the World Endurance Championship arose. They're not really a part of anybody, but in a way they are; WEC is a co-operation between the FIA and the ACO. They are a series who sometimes uses other series' endurance races to assemble a season of seven 6-hour races, plus they race at the 24 heures du Mans. The 'W' in their name is substantiated too, they race in Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, and Asia.

ALMS, ELMS, JGTC, and others are still their own entity though sometimes they share a weekend with the WEC. Example: A few years back WEC joined the ALMS' 12-hours of Sebring.
