So, another cool thing about iRacing I just saw. You can host your own tournament. And after, you can gift monetary credits for iRacing purchases if you wish as a reward. That's pretty cool. I'm going to look into some of the details of tournament racing.

So basically you're saying we should change the forum to iRacing Road Racing??? That would let Squid have his NASCAR series...

We could hang another banner, an iRacing banner, if Tux and Rem. want a location to post league information. Or we could broaden its horizons and call it the digital racing banner where iRacing, Live For Speed, and other sim. racing games can go.

I don't want to steal Tux's thread but I figured this was an appropriate place to share...

I didn't go with the full sim rig due to funds (despite what squid may say I'm no where near rich) and I also get dual use of the monitors for my computer, or if I ever make the switch to iracing or what have you. The desk and screens also works great for other non racing PC games.

I might still have to steal your build info Tux and copy your awesome rig.

No worries Sorta. I still plan on posting the build specs. I have been too busy racing at the moment. But I will get around to it. Cool setup by the way. I too use this computer for other things now, however it is a little bit of a chore getting into it and typing on my lap. However, the racing is brilliant.

This is the biggest reason I haven't built a rig. Both my wife and myself have envisioned hinged, semi-folding apparatuseses... Apparati?....... Setups. Just none have come to fruition yet, right now it's hinging (heh, awesome) on my ability to slide or maneuver my monitor back to my desk for other gaming. My Minecraft world isn't going to build itself!

Thanks Josh and Tux!

Tux that's one of the reasons I chose not to do the dedicated sim rig. I like FPS to much to give up my desk!

Ain't nothin wrong with a desk for a rig, if'n ya got the right desk! As long as it's comfortable whilst driving with a wheel.

Awesome Tux! I just (last week) upgraded to a quad core processor, new motherboard, and 8gb of DDR5 RAM. Tossed in my 750gb HDD that wouldn't work on my old motherboard, fresh install of Windows 7, and away I go. Still running 2 GeForce 9800 GT cards each with 1gb RAM, in SLI, to the tune of 50 - 90 fps. Not the best, but much better than it was.

Damn! Nice upgrades. Are you running trips? I'm assuming yes, because you're running two GPUs.

I wish. Nope, single 24" monitor. Had to return the 32" TV because the color was off and I couldn't do both. So, return the TV and spend a bit more but got some nice hardware. Trips would be nice, but my wife won't go for it.

Wow, that's AWESOME! If I could get her to agree, I'd ask you for the blueprints, or at least the measurements, then I could go from there. It should be fine though, I've run the 10 races with SimXperience as my main sponsor so I plan on winning that motion cockpit lol!

Tux,

Would you be willing to share the blueprints and cost of your rig (hardware for the rig only not the PC/wheel/monitors). I've had it with this desk setup and want something more comfortable and more immersive and think it's time to take the leap.

Thanks,
Brad

Sorry, I never got around to doing that. I'll try to get that done for you soon. I tweaked some things from the original build so I'll take new measurements. Do you need the cost of the seat? If you don't use the same seat that I did, you may need to make a few changes on the seat mount.

Yeah what kind of seat did you get and how much did it run you? What are you happy with and what would you change the next go around?

Thanks Tux!

Re: My Sim Rig Build

Here's the material list. I'm sure you may be able to save a few bucks if you buy stuff directly from suppliers. I priced this out on Home Depot and estimated some of what I couldn't find. All of this will be enough to do the build exactly as I did. Keep in mind, there may be some variances with yours due to body size, pedals, wheel, shifter, monitors, etc. I hardmounted all of my components. Make sure your monitors will hardmount, or you may have to get a little creative by making up a mount. I will do a blueprint when I have time.

Here's the seat. It comes in other colors.

Things I'd change: It's a little tight getting in and out at first, but I got used to it really fast. This is a side-effect of it being in an accurate driving position. The seat can be moved back to help. I plan to add a movable tray for the keyboard. I may move the shifter up a bit and use a bigger mount board for it so the mouse is not on the wheel board. With just a few more materials, I may add a table behind the monitors/above the pedals to house the computer to clean it up a bit.

Also, keep in mind, I used heavy duty hardware. You may look at the materials list with one eyebrow raised, but this thing is super strong by design. It may be cheaper to get the strength by welding and using less fasteners, but I didn't want to do it that way. There's full adjustability and capability for disassembly this way.

Another thing, I think the bolts I used were zinc plated. It was whatever the cheapest steel ones were in the hardware section. I know the stainless ones are much more expensive. Either way, as long as they're steel they'll be strong enough, so get the cheap ones. Check places like Grainger and Fastenal for bulk discounts.

No problem. I'll be away this weekend, so I'll try to post the blueprint when I get back at some point. I'm wondering if I should make a video instead.
