Modeling vehicles

Post  Avanti 63r1025 on Wed Jul 18, 2012 11:03 pm

I'm browsing EBay for die cast models and I got to thinking "What if electronic entertainment companies rendered die cast models for their game?" Many companies creating die cast models take pride in their accuracy and because they do, their dimensions are often very close. Obviously bigger examples would be easier to model so 1:12, 1:18, and 1:24 would be simpler than 1:32 or 1:64. I bring this up because getting one's hands on die cast models is much much easier than getting the real car.

The interiors are where difficulties lie. With Gran Turismo up through G.T. 4 or Forza Motorsport through 2 where interiors weren't rendered, maybe there were some die cast models used? Are we too far for that now? Could a team of programmers render the exterior of a die cast model and fabricate an interior from photos, say, taken at an Int'l Auto Show or race event; and if they did would the completed design be acceptable to the end-user?

I've heard about 3D printers. God knows it's only a matter of time before I can "fax" a hamburger to Rem. or a can of Pabst B.R. to Tux. Also along those lines, one of the Kinect showcases at last year's E3 demonstrated the Kinect scanning an item into an XBox game. Forza 5, may I please scan a die cast of Mark Donohue's 1969 Trans-Am Z/28 into the game?

I think it would be cool to one day see modeling companies (Franklin Mint, Ertl, et al) work side-by-side with electronic entertainment companies to create their variation of cars, digital reproduction or scaled physical model.
